What’s the Difference between Flash Drive and Hard Drive?

Q: My grandson wants a big hard drive for the holidays, and I have seen a 1TB flash drive in the airport, but it’s labeled almost close to a thousand dollars.  Then my son told me I can get a regular big hard drive for less than 100 bucks in Amazon. What’s the difference between flash drive and hard drive?

A: Quick answer, there is only one major difference for normal users, the durability.  We can drop a flash drive on the floor without worrying too much about the damage over the data inside .  However, if we drop a hard drive instead, we would expect some damage on the disc inside , which might cause some data lost.

For more…

The flash drive, often called jump drive or USB flash drive, is originally created to transfer data between computers; in a sense it’s a 21st century floppy disk, just in a much colorful skin.  As you can see all those promotion and commercial flash drives, the market has been booming for a while.

This is how flash drive looks inside. It’s a piece of computer chip, and that’s why it’s ok to drop it on the floor.

As normal users, we often have several small USB flash drives, between 8G to 32G, because they are selling for a reasonable and almost cheap price.  And most likely, we use them to transfer large files, such as movies, music, or photos.  For smaller files, such as text files or presentation files, many users  share them by the cloud storage today, for a very good reason that the USB flash drive could carry some computer virus, which may endanger users’ computers.

As for the hard drive , we used to install it inside computers, but today, many of us are taking it on the run.   Such kind of hard drive is called portable or external hard drive, as the name suggests well: users can take it around and it stays outside the main frame of a computer.

The hard drive is relatively cheap those days, and many of us have more than one for large files, such as photos, music or movies.  This is how the hard drive looks like inside.

The basic framework of a hard drive hasn’t changed too much since it was invented. Only the size of it has become  much smaller than that of its first model.  As we can see, it almost looks like 21st century version of vinyl records, so if we drop it, we would expect the break of the needle and possible damage on the disk.

The durability of a flash drive is why we choose it for data transfer; however, it comes with a high price when the capacity goes up, as we notice.  For some daily transfer jobs from one computer to another, a 8G to 32G flash drive would be the best choice.  And for the capacity beyond 32G, a real hard drive will save you some green.  Of course, for all who need to run in and out the war zones and jungles, a big flash drive will be a needed choice.  However, for normal users who mainly want a hard drive to save some files, such as games, music, movies or photos, the external hard drive is a better and more affordable choice.  Just remember, do not throw it over a football field.

Why People “Poke” Me In Facebook?

Q: I only started using Facebook recently, and I come to notice that from time to time friends poke me. What does this poke do? And what is the proper response?

A: Quick answer, poke does nothing, and there is no official rule on how to respond any poke.

One important issue that all Facebook users need to be aware of is if you poke a user who has not become your friends in Facebook, she/he will be able to see your Facebook page for 3 days. Of course, if your Facebook account is open to anyone, this will not make any difference. However, if your account is more of friends only, which means only your friends or family can see your posts, then think twice before you poke others back.

About the meaning of the poke…some see poke as saying, “ Hello!”, and some say poke means sending some kind of “I have my eyes on you” sign. If you have a friend who likes to poke, chances are he/she may just want to say “Hello~!” But for the sure reason, you can ask the person through the Facebook message. There are countless articles on the webs discussing this mysterious Facebook poke function, and they have their own explanations. Some articles write about the age of poke being gone, and others are posting about the poke coming back.

If you ask me, “so what do you do with all those pokes? ”, my answer is, I get better things to do, and I will get back to them when I feel like to.

How To Get On the Internet For A Reasonable Price ?

Before we explain anything further, first thing first, we are not big fans of AOL dailup, because the internet now is much bigger than dialup can handle.

High-speed internet service is not cheap, and most of all, many seniors are not using it that often. Understandable, there are better things to do, just name a few, physical exercises, doctors’ appointments, and community functions. However, like the house phone for the 20th century, the internet is now a basic requirement for the 21st century. We want to enjoy it, but we don't want to pay more than we need, so the only way to make it down a reasonable price is one word, SHARE.

The price for a high-speed, broad band internet service is about $34.99 to $59.99 per month. it’s not that cheap, if one doesn’t use it every day. However, if you and neighbors  share the same internet service , that will cut the cost down dramatically.

This is the job you need Helper to do it for you,or to find some one to do it for you.

The game plan is, first, find neighbors, not too far from your place, who would like to share home internet service with you. Second, figure out who wants to be the internet manager to apply for the internet service and have it installed in his/her place. Third, here is where you need the Helper or professional installers. Setup a Wi-Fi network around those neighbors who share this internet service. This means sending Wi-Fi signals from your place to their place. The signals can go quite far away, as long as nothing blocks in between.

At the end, most important, figure out when and who should collect the money and make sure the bill gets paid on time monthly.

A Better Way To Share Photos, And To Save More Than A Nickel.

For the environmental concern, and the health of your bank accounts, stop burning CDs to share photos.

There is a better and cheaper way to do so, and that is using free online photo storage.

There are a lot of good choices now, such as Dropbox, Flickr, or Facebook…etc.; however, for all non-tech-genetic-users, the best choice is Google+ photo.

You can share photos with anyone who can get online, and have email address where you can give them the link of your photos.

Although Google+ Photo only provides 15 GB space, but photos smaller than 2048x2048 pixels will not count as using your storage space. What this means is to stop worrying about the space; there will be more room than you need.

But here is the fine print.

If you take pictures with those good cameras, then you will still need to backup your original photos on CDs/DVDs. You can use Google+ Photo for share only. If you are those cellphone camera men, or pocket size camera persons, you can use Google+ Photo to save all your photos as backup and share them at the same time. Just Remember to write down your email address and passwords, so the future generations can access your photos after.

Keep Your Email Accounts Healthy

Today, under circumstances not related to work, there is no way to fill up any free email box, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL; however, this is before I met a student who showed me his full gmail inbox. Then I started to study my students’ email boxes and their email behaviors.  I come to realize that many seniors have a serious issue in managing their emails.

Photo by NEC Corporation of America with Creative Commons license.

There are two types of senior email users, the Keeper and the Worrier. If your keep all emails you love, you are the Keeper. If you constantly delete emails after you read, you are the Worrier, who worries about reaching the limit of your free email account.

Both types of users have their own problems to deal with, but the truth is, there are some basic guidelines to follow. And they will help you how to keep emails, and maintain your email accounts in good health without worries.
First, the bottom line is, normal emails, emails with only texts, don’t use  too much space. For such emails , you can afford to keep them all forever.

Second,  what does take up a lot of space in your email accounts are files, such as ppt files, pdf documents and photos. Sharing files and photos wisely, you will not only help yourself and friends to maintain email account healthy, but also keep sharing within your own circles.

Two actions, you may want to start toady.

1.Stop emailing people photos; instead, share photo links through online free photo storage, such as DropBox, Flickr, and Google+ Photo.

2.Stop emailing files, such as ppt, power point file, or pdf to others. Save ppt or pdf files to cloud storage and share the links with others.

Of course, those two actions will not stop your friends to send you more super size emails, but as we all know, change begins with you. The best thing about sharing photos by online free photo storage is no one can make fun of you and your ex anymore, because you can stop sharing photos you no longer like anytime, now or years later.

How People Make Money by Blogs?

Q: My grandkid told me he is making some extra as a blogger, and he planned to do a side business out of it. How can this be when he is not charging anything for his blog?

A:
There are many ways to make money out of blogs, or blogging, such as writing review articles for products to get paid, selling services over blogs, or the most common way, ads posting.

Most bloggers have ads put on their site for making some cash. ( We don't here.)
Whoever has websites or blogs can apply for ads on their websites.  To post ads on the blog requires almost nothing, as long as the blog updates often enough and posts no offensive content. Most widely used is Google AdSence. And for blogs with good traffic, this means when more than thousand people pay a visit each day, they could make some money out of it.

As a support grand parent, there is a way you can help your grandkids to make a couple of cents more. That’s  to click on the ads. Remember to do it often, but not every day. Will this make him a millionaire? Probably not, but it’s important to show some supports.

Yes, It’s Time To Have A Tech-Helper.

Not all of people are tech-genetic, so a Tech-Helper is often needed for all ages.

A student once told me the reason she attended the computer class was that she hoped she didn’t need to ask for help any more. I told her how unrealistic it was, because even I, regarded tech-genetic, seek help all the time. Learning tech stuff is not about “I can be on my own,” but more of “I know HOW and WHAT to ask others to help me.”

For all one-time setup process, I always recommend  having a Tech-Helper setup for you, because time is valuable. Don’t waste it on learning things that you don’t use often. Save the energy and the memory power, and go for the skills and steps used daily. It’s all about ROI.

A Tech-Helper is a person who is comfortable to be with and has a basic ability to deal with everyday tech stuff. He/she doesn’t need to be great with tech stuff, as long as he/she knows where to find more help when needed. And most of all, you need to feel comfortable to ask endless questions to your Tech-Helper. If you get time, please read Being Curious Is Great, But Don’t Go Too Far for building a great relationship with your Tech-Helper.

In fact, there are endless new techs coming up every day. Learn only what you need, and master those skills. A Tech-Helper could help you with many tech issues, but he/she doesn't necessarily give you lessons about computers, smart devices, websites, and all tech skills. Attend classes or have tutors for learning purpose. If you have some unexpected situations , ask  a Tech-Helper to deal with them for you, and feel great that you know how to ask questions.

How Can I Use Those Free Instant Messaging (IM)?

There is one very basic requirement to use those free internet messaging (IM), such as Hangout, Line, iMessage, Whatsapp, or Facebook Messenger. There get to be enough friends on the services for you to have good reason to use it daily.

Some could face the situation like my Dad’s, that he would love to do those free IM services, but all his friends are still on landlines. There is really no good reason for him to use it daily. Once he doesn’t use it often, he forgets how to do it soon.

As we talked about  in How to Choose the Right  Social  Media to Use, it's almost the same process in trying IM. First, figure out what type of IM services those people you like to have conversations with are using. It would be fun only if there are more than handful of people in the circle. If you can’t find enough people, take some classes and you will not only gain new friends, but also learn useful skills, and slow down aging process.

For the technical part, you will need to have internet service at home, and smart devices, iPad, or those HTC, and Samsung Pad. You could use smart phones, but make sure you are comfortable to read and type on those small screens. Surely an old-fashioned computer or Chromebook will do with some IM services, but just you may not feel the POWER of 21st century by using them.

Being Curious Is Great, But Don’t Go Too Far.

Staying curious to new things is great, but when it comes to learning tech how-to, you may want to save your healthy curiosity for later.

First share with you a story titled, What Does This Button Do…!

Years before my mom retired, more than 15 years ago, the school decided to rebuild the system and all teachers were required to key in the computer directly. Before that, assistants would do the computer job for teachers. For many older teachers, this was a hard task and under many pressure, the training classes began.

At the first class, in the very first hour, a trainer almost lost his temper! He started the class by telling all teachers what the ON button did on the computer. Right after that, a teacher aged near 60, raised her hand and asked,“ What does the blue one next to it do?” The trainer answered that question, but the old teacher kept asking about all the buttons in the front, and then went on to the plugins in the back. At the end, the teacher made a comment that it was impossible for her to remember so much technical stuff, plus learning how to operate this piece of modern equipment. At the moment, the bell went off, so class was dismissed. The trainer told my mom that he was really saved by the bell, because he came close to telling the old lady, “Shut up and just push the ON button, NOW!”

Most seniors are curious and staying curious is a wonderful life attitude. However, learning tech stuff is almost like learning how to drive. One doesn’t really need to know how a car runs, before he/she can drive the car down the road; he/she only needs to learn how to move forward, how to turn and how to stop. Then the rest of driving is all down to constant practice .

At the end, when it comes to learning the new tech, learning the how by listening, copying, and following is the easiest way to insure a great learning process

Knowing the WHY will help, but don’t let the curiosity take over the show.

What Does The Incognito Window Do in Chrome?

Q: Chrome has this incognito mode. Does it prevent others from seeing or stealing my information over the internet?

A:
I am always amazed by seniors’ imagination, and whoever says people lose their imagination by age should start a new study today.

The incognito window, browsing in private, is located on upper-right hand corner of Chrome browser.

Once you click it, Google does give users a great description of what this function does.

Part I:
Pages you view in incognito tabs won’t stick around in your browser’s history, cookie store, or search history after you’ve closed all of your incognito tabs. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be kept.

This means people who use this computer or device after you will not be able to see where you have surfed, but they can still view the files you have downloaded and bookmarks you created, if you don’t delete them.

Part II:
Going incognito doesn’t hide your browsing from your employer, your internet service provider, or the websites you visit.

This means if you meet a hacker, or identity thief, they can still see everything you do, if they want to. And if you watch or download some illegal things, the internet monitors can still see all of your activities.

So what does this incognito mode for?
If you use public computers to check your private emails or surf over  the internet, you may want to use the incognito mode. In this case, you can keep your private business secret, when you use public computers. At home, you can use this mode, when you are searching gifts for your loved one or items you know others might not like you to use, so they wouldn't accidentally find the secret out when they share the same computer with you.

For iPad or iPhone users, Safari has the same function, called Private, and it is located on the lower left corner when you open a new Safari window.

An Easier Way To Check Two Email Accounts.

Q: I do the two email things you suggest.  I open a new Gmail, but log in and out between two Gmail accoutns is too much for me.  Is there any easier way to do it?

A:
If you check email in the browser, going back and forth two email accounts is a real job. Here is a good way to enjoy the benefit of two email accounts with a simple click, if you use Chrome for web surfing.

We are going to do some setting with your Chrome web browser. Since this is a onetime thing, there is no point learning or fooling around this process. So if you don’t feel comfortable with this, please ask your helper to do it for you.

Since Chrome allows users to create different windows for different users, this means we can use Window 1 for the personal email, and Window 2 for the commercial email.  In this way, we don’t need to log in and out for different emails. Bad new is, this is limited to Gmail users only.

Setup for a new user.

Step 1: open setting

As usual, click the three-line icons on the upper right hand side, to find the setting within.

Step 2: create a new user

In the setting window, scroll down until the Users section.

Click Add New User
Select an icon you like.

Click the bar beside the name, and type in a meaningful name. And click Create.

Step 3: log in

Once you hit Create, a new window will show up. If you use gmail, log in with your another gmail account, and if you use other email providers, go to their website and log in.

How to use it?
When you open Chrome, on the upper right or left corner, depending on the OS, you will see the icon you have chosen.

Click the icon, and select another user.

Chrome will open a new window for another user, and this window should have your another email account stay logged in. Now you can jump back and forth, without retyping any password.

Please, only use this trick in your home computer fir safety reaosn. If you use public computer, always use the incognito mode to browse in private.

What Is the Difference Between Emails, And Free Instant Messaging, Such As Whatsapp, Messenger, or iMessage ?

There are many free internet instant messaging services today. Some popular ones are Whatsapp, Hangout, iMessage, Line, Facebook Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Telegram, and even Skype counts as one, too.

Since smart devices have become  a necessity of our daily life, those services have grown widely. Most users are using two or more instant messaging services at once, not because we have a lot of friends, but because our friends might use different type of smartphones or live in different countries.

Some instant messaging services are only available under selected smart devices, such as iMessage are excursive for Apple iPhone, iPad. Also in few counties, some instant messaging services are blocked by local officials, and a good example is currently Line are unavailable in China.

E-mail is like letters, and internet instant messaging services are close to text messages, or conversations over phones.

One main difference between emails and instant messaging is that we would know if the recipient reads the messages or not. We know the email is on its way, because we hear the flying-away sound. However, there is no way for us to know if the recipient reads the email or not. With the instant messaging, we can know when the recipient reads the message. Of course, one shouldn’t use instant messaging for everything, because that would be very annoying. The guideline is for things that you want to call, but not in such hurry to get  a reply. You can consider using instant messaging for the job. What my mom does is that for any small things she wants to know, but not right away, such as, “ what’s the dinner for next Sat?” she will drop me an iMessage, and whenever I get time, I can reply.

Another issue needs to take notice is that, while we always have copies of all sent emails, instant messaging services don’t keep all your conversation history. For things  you need the I-send-it proof in the future, send it with emails. And you could always follow up with an instant messaging to the recipient to inform him/her that the email is on its way. Almost like in the old days, we called our friends to watch out for coming posts or packages.

Those instant messaging services are just another way to get people closer, and if use them wisely, the 21st century will be the time when the family can finally stay close despite the physical distance between them.

How To Cut Down Advertising Emails?

Q: I don’t call them junk emails because I do like commercials and advertisements. They bring interesting new information to me, but I don’t like them to live in between my personal emails. What could I do?

A:
Here is something you can do.
What I often suggest my students doing is having two email accounts, one for your personal use, and the other for commercials.

You only give your  personal email for real people, also for your banking, insurance, or investment agents.

All other things, such as subscription for magazines, trying out free stuff online, or anything on the website you want to see what would happen after you give them the email, you can just give them your commercial email account.

This way, you know all important emails will always arrive in your personal email account, and if you don’t get much time to check emails, you only need to check the personal email account. And leave all the fun commercials and advertisings to where they belong, out of your personal life.
