What’s Different Between Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Blogger, and Wordpress?
Technically, they are all blogs as we talked about in What Is Blog? However, normally, people see Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest as social media, and classify Blogger and Wordpress as blogs.

The key to this separation is the social networking functions provided by the websites. For a social media website, it would automatically share posts with all of users' friends. For a blog, usually users post articles and their friends come to the blogs by themselves. Another main separation is the Thumb Up function, or the LIKE function, embedded in social media websites, not in blogs.
Also the content that people share in social media and blogs are somewhat different. In social media, users often share information they like from other websites or some short sentences, often not very clear expressions about their mood or life. Most social media are technically counted as microblogs with the text limit for each post. Social media could be seen as fast-food restaurants, while blogs are more like traditional sit-down restaurants. Users take time to write original articles which they like to share with others, or take photos or videos. You will see mostly original creations in blogs, and also some commercials, by which bloggers make money.
The bottom line is, when normal people talk about blogs, they most likely mean a website with a lot of texts, or photos, such as techmeslowly.com. And for social media, they usually mean “ Do you share info with others? ” or “ Could you thumb up my posts? ”
Point is all websites have their own advantages, so choose them, based on what you need, and operate them wisely.

Which Social Media Should I Use?
Get a piece of paper and answer this question:
Who do I want to connect through this action?
The answer should be your family members, friends, co-workers, or classmates. If you want to connect to celebrities or politic figures, you can easily find them all over social media; try Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

For whoever wants to connect with people in our own life, it’s actually very easy. Go talk to the person(s) that you list, and ask them what kind of social media they mainly use. You just need ONE, and join the same social media. It may be Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram or Tumblr. Please notice LinkedIn is not really the social media that you want to join, because it’s business-oriented and people use it to connect for work, not life.
Please, be aware that people use social media in many different ways. Some of your children or grandkids might not want you to know too much of their “happy” real life. So if you find them putting you on acquaintance, please be considerate.
Most important is your action.
First, stop being a bystander while joining this social game. Post as often as possible, if not, at least once a week. Because, if you don’t do it often, you would forget it!
Second, write comments…nice comments when you like their posts. Social media are all about feedback, because humans need connections, meaningful connections. Above all, once you pass away, those posts will be part of their precious memories.

Now, if you have someone in mind to contact , let’s create connections, and start sharing you life with people you care about today.

What are Social Media ?
Social media are websites such as Google+, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter and Tumblr.
Picture all this as bulletin boards in the 21st century.

Remember the bulletin boards in the back of classrooms, or at the hallways in college. Social media are serving the same function as those old-fashioned bulletin boards: information spreading.
The bulletin board in the back of a classroom in the first grade usually posted alphabet stories, and field trip photos. The bulletin board in college campus posted information about parties, or school events. We use the verb "post" for putting up information on a bulletin board. Today, people post a post on Google+, or FaceBook. The same word "post" has been used, because they serve the same function.
The two main differences between the 21st century internet bulletin boards and old-fashioned real bulletin boards are information and feedback.
First, the information.
Today we can put almost anything on internet bulletin boards. Posts about daily lives, work lives, and even dating lives are all over the internet.

Why do so many people like to read those posts? Because humans need connections. Those internet bulletin boards create connections for those who do not live close-by any more. About the time my parents grew up, 70 years ago, the family used to live in the same town and they connected with each other by going over for dinners or teas. In the 21st century, to have the whole family live in the same town sounds almost backward. Many of us travel and land in some exotic places so far away from our family. In the past, they would call this an expedition, or a voyage of life time. Today, many are doing it on the daily basis.
Second, the feedback.
Those websites allow us not only to post information up , but also to get back what others think about our information right away.
And why does “ thumbs up” become so important these days? The same reason: humans need connections. When we talk face to face, we love to hear people say “Yeah,” “You are right,” or “That’s so true.” The same with the thumb thing.

Now, why are there so many internet bulletin boards? Of course, because they function differently. It is almost like why we pick up a truck over a sedan ,or vice versa. Based on our needs, or popularity, we pick up what type of social media that we like to use.
