Tech lingo: basic internet words

We surf the Internet.
We use a browser to browse the Internet.
We use search engine to find information on the internet.

  • // surf & browse

Those are two words often referring to spending time on the internet, or sitting in front of the computer or staring at an iPad or a smartphone. Those two words mean, “ I am doing something on the internet, but nothing particular.”

Most of the time we use them when we don’t want to get into “what we are doing on the internet.” It’s almost like when people ask, “ What were you doing in the mall?” We reply, “ Nothing, just walk around.”

  • // browser

A web browser, often called browser, is a software on our computer or iPad. A browser can take us to the world wide web, the internet.

I.E., Internet Explorer, is a browser.

Netscape is a browser, which I hope no one still uses.

FireFox is a browser.

Opera is a browser.

Safari is a browser.

Chrome is a browser.

Why are there so many browsers? The same to why there are so many department stores, grocery stores, banks and gas stations. Personal preference, easy access, benefits and most of all, the familiarity. Also, as Target has its own Target brand products, and so do the browsers. Some sites might function well under selected browsers and not others. This happens often with banking or government websites.

  • // search engine

Search engine is almost like yellow page; only it updates more than once a year. It’s a website that we use browsers to go to. And we get on a search engine to find information from the internet.

Google is a search engine.

Yahoo is a search engine.

Bing is a search engine.

And if you get a family working in China, Baidu is THE search engine there.

Why are there so many search engines? The same to why there are so many department stores, grocery stores, banks and gas stations.

This sentence:
I was sitting in front of the computer this afternoon. I used a web browser to get on a search engine and find information that I need.

Normally it is written like this:
I was surfing the internet this afternoon. I used Chrome to get on Google and find the information that I need.

How To Get On the Internet For A Reasonable Price ?

Before we explain anything further, first thing first, we are not big fans of AOL dailup, because the internet now is much bigger than dialup can handle.

High-speed internet service is not cheap, and most of all, many seniors are not using it that often. Understandable, there are better things to do, just name a few, physical exercises, doctors’ appointments, and community functions. However, like the house phone for the 20th century, the internet is now a basic requirement for the 21st century. We want to enjoy it, but we don't want to pay more than we need, so the only way to make it down a reasonable price is one word, SHARE.

The price for a high-speed, broad band internet service is about $34.99 to $59.99 per month. it’s not that cheap, if one doesn’t use it every day. However, if you and neighbors  share the same internet service , that will cut the cost down dramatically.

This is the job you need Helper to do it for you,or to find some one to do it for you.

The game plan is, first, find neighbors, not too far from your place, who would like to share home internet service with you. Second, figure out who wants to be the internet manager to apply for the internet service and have it installed in his/her place. Third, here is where you need the Helper or professional installers. Setup a Wi-Fi network around those neighbors who share this internet service. This means sending Wi-Fi signals from your place to their place. The signals can go quite far away, as long as nothing blocks in between.

At the end, most important, figure out when and who should collect the money and make sure the bill gets paid on time monthly.

An Easier Way To Check Two Email Accounts.

A:
If you check email in the browser, going back and forth two email accounts is a real job. Here is a good way to enjoy the benefit of two email accounts with a simple click, if you use Chrome for web surfing.

We are going to do some setting with your Chrome web browser. Since this is a onetime thing, there is no point learning or fooling around this process. So if you don’t feel comfortable with this, please ask your helper to do it for you.

Since Chrome allows users to create different windows for different users, this means we can use Window 1 for the personal email, and Window 2 for the commercial email.  In this way, we don’t need to log in and out for different emails. Bad new is, this is limited to Gmail users only.

Setup for a new user.

Step 1: open setting

As usual, click the three-line icons on the upper right hand side, to find the setting within.

Step 2: create a new user

In the setting window, scroll down until the Users section.

Click Add New User
Select an icon you like.

Click the bar beside the name, and type in a meaningful name. And click Create.

Step 3: log in

Once you hit Create, a new window will show up. If you use gmail, log in with your another gmail account, and if you use other email providers, go to their website and log in.

How to use it?
When you open Chrome, on the upper right or left corner, depending on the OS, you will see the icon you have chosen.

Click the icon, and select another user.

Chrome will open a new window for another user, and this window should have your another email account stay logged in. Now you can jump back and forth, without retyping any password.

Please, only use this trick in your home computer fir safety reaosn. If you use public computer, always use the incognito mode to browse in private.
